UM 'teachout' planned for Wednesday
By Betsy Cohen of the Missoulian

A handful of University of Montana professors, along with the groups Students for Peace and Community Action for Justice in the Americas, are planning a "teachout" for Wednesday at the Missoula campus.

The event will be held on the Oval at noon.

Despite its name, the teachout is intended to create more learning opportunities to discuss what the war in Iraq is about, said Pamela Voekel, an organizer and professor of Latin American history.

"Hopefully it will be an opportunity for students to think about the war differently, and hear different viewpoints than the ones they are getting from the war coverage," Voekel said.

"The plan is to look at alternative ways America may act in this world, and talk about the difference of global justice, not global empire," she said. "We'll talk about why Iraq, why now and what we hope to gain from this war."

The event will last an hour, with the hope that it will morph into further, smaller discussion groups. If people have information they want to share, they are welcome to distribute material, Voekel said.

Among the UM professors participating in the event will be Casey Charles and Katie Kane of the English department and Paul Haber of political science.

For more information about the teachout, contact Voekel at 543-3811.
