BILLINGS - Jerold Eugene "Jerry" Walker, 72, of Billings, passed away in the morning, Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, after a courageous battle with an extended illness.

He was born in Treece, Kan., on Feb. 26, 1931, the son of the late Clarence Walker and Ollie Walker Potts and stepson of the late Doyle Potts.

Jerry was the husband of Barbara Walker and former husband to the late Joann Walker Chatwood.

He was raised and educated in Billings and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in the summer of 1949, just after what should have been his graduation from Billings Senior High School.

Jerry was a real-life genuine hero to his country, family and friends. During the Korean Conflict, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps, he was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for wounds inflicted by bayonet, rifle and hand grenade.

He received a bachelor's degree in physical education and two years later received a master's degree in guidance counseling, both from the University of Montana. He spent two years in Idaho as a teacher and coach and then returned to Billings to work at Riverside Junior High School and Will James Junior High School. He spent the bulk of his career, 32 years, at Billings Senior High, the last 15 years as assistant principal.

Over the years, he coached football, track and baseball. He retired from School District No. 2 in 1992 and then worked as a guidance counselor in Lovell, Wyo., for five years before retiring for real.

Jerry was a hero to his family as a loving father, mentor, role model and the "wind beneath their wings."

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Jeri Ann (John) Jewell of California, Md.; sons, Jack (Joy Lynn) Walker of Spokane and Jeff Walker of Missoula; four grandchildren, Jamie Jewell, Kari Walker, Jake Walker and Ryan Walker; brother, Jim Walker of Billings; and a host of other family and friends.

Also surviving are Barbara's children, Randall (Ruba) Watts, Wesley Guy, Charles (Sandra) Watts, Kevin (Teresa) Watts and Carla (Kevin) Sessions; 20 step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

You will always be with us in spirit. You always had a loving heart and open arms to everyone you came in contact with. You always prepared trips down to the final detail and were ready to go days ahead of time. We are thankful for the extra years the Lord let you stay with us. We love you and will truly miss you.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at the LDS Stake Center, 2929 Belvedere Drive. Interment with military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends between 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Smith's Downtown Chapel.
