Sam Houston State football coach retires
By The Associated Press

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - A day after losing in the Division I-AA playoffs to Montana, longtime Sam Houston State coach Ron Randleman announced Sunday that he would retire after a school-record 11 wins this season and a Southland Conference championship.

Randleman, with an overall head coaching record of 219-166-6, has led the Bearkats for 23 years. He finishes third in victories among active Division I-AA coaches, and his teams have won 11 conference championships and made 10 postseason national playoff appearances.

Randleman, 62, said he's ready to spend more time with his family.

"I take a lot of pride in what all the men who have been part of this program have accomplished," he said.

Randleman, whose Bearkats went from 2-9 last year to 11-3 this season, is a finalist for the 2004 Eddy Robinson award as NCAA Division I-AA coach of the year. His overall record at Sam Houston is 132-124-3.

Before coming to Sam Houston in 1982, he coached seven seasons at William Penn and six years at Pittsburg State.

Sam Houston's season ended Saturday in a 34-13 loss to Montana, which will face James Madison this week for the national championship. Sam Houston was making its first NCAA Division I-AA national semifinals appearance.
