No. 1 Kalispell qualifies 11 for semifinals
By NICK LOCKRIDGE of the Missoulian

BILLINGS - The Kalispell wrestling team got to taste the good and the bad on Friday, the first day of the all-class state wrestling meet at MetraPark.

The top-ranked Braves held their ground against the best Class AA had to offer in the early going. Kalispell qualified 11 wrestlers for Saturday's semifinals - the same number as last year when the Braves won their first state title since 1973.

The defending champs stumbled, however, when it came to the wrestlebacks later in the evening.

"It was kind of a rollercoaster day for Flathead," said Braves head coach Jeff Thompson. "We had an awesome quarterfinal and then in the back door we didn't wrestle up to our ability."

Second-ranked Billings Skyview advanced nine wrestlers to the semis, which begin at 9 a.m. The Falcons, though, kept an additional 13 wrestlers alive, while Kalispell added just four in the wrestlebacks.

That gave Skyview a total of 1711/2 points, nearly 20 points more than Kalispell (152) heading into Saturday's final rounds.

"Tomorrow is a new day," Thompson said. "We have to get momentum on our side. That will help seperate the men from the boys."

Championship finals for all classes are slated for 6 p.m. Consolation finals are at 3 p.m., with semis at noon.

Two-time defending champions Sidney of Class A and Conrad of Class B-C didn't exactly dominate their divisions either.

Top-ranked Sidney trails No. 2 Havre by one half point in the team standings. Both squads qualified seven wrestlers for Saturday's semifinals.

The next five teams in the standings are all from Western Montana - No. 3 Libby, No. 9 Columbia Falls, No. 4 Polson, No. 7 Frenchtown and No. 6 Whitefish.

Conrad, the No. 1 team in Class B-C, has a 2 1/2-point lead (881/2-86) on No. 2 Cut Bank. Deer Lodge is on the only western Montana team currently in the top 10.

Here's a look at each classification:

Class AA

Third-ranked Billings Senior qualified eight wrestlers for the semifinals, while No. 4 Butte had seven. Still, both the Broncs (112) and the Bulldogs (119) are looking more like third-place contenders.

The Braves will need a lot of help if they want to repeat. Thompson said nearly all of his wrestlers have to place in order to knock Skyview out of the driver's seat.

Kalispell would need to duplicate its semifinal performance from last year when the Braves tied a state record for the most number of wrestlers in the finals.

"We won eight of those last year," said Thompson of the semis. "But this is a different team, a younger team. They're wrestling the best they can."

The lower weights belonged to Kalispell. Brian Ham (98), T.C. Decker (105) and Austin Zapata and Ricky Janes (both 119) made the semis.

Brandon Mitchell (125), Duran Flaget (130) and Chris Thompson, a 189-pounder who was runner-up in 2004, advanced as well as heavyweight Brandon Hoffenbacker.

One surprise for the Braves was Damien Farrier, a first-time wrestler who took sixth at divisionals. He joins Thompson in the 189 semifinals.

"Overall, we're happy with where we're at," Thompson said. "But we have to place."

All four of the returning champions from Class AA advanced to the semis.

Great Falls' Kody Tolliver, who is attempting to become a three-time state champ, will face Senior's Trent Sprenkle, a champ in 2004, in the 119 semifinal.

Butte's Cole Dallaserra, also looking for three state crowns, advanced at 130 pounds.

CMR's Tom Daniels (152) will get a chance to repeat. Also, Butte's Brody Verrall, a 2003 state champ, made the semis.

Missoula's three Class AA schools combined to send three wrestlers to the semis - one from each.

Big Sky's Will Cusker defeated teammate Don Widdicombe by technical fall to advance in the 135-pound division. Cusker was a runner-up at 119 pounds in 2004.

The Eagles, which brought 22 wrestlers to state, managed to keep six alive for Saturday's action.

"All the kids wrestled extremely hard," said Big Sky coach Jon Cusker. "I thought we'd have more like nine kids left after the quarterfinals, but it wasn't for a lack of effort."

Sentinel's Drake Lemm (152) moved into the semis with a 3-1 win over Great Falls' Toby Bender. Hellgate's Austin Ouellette (160) pinned Skyview's Caleb Scott in 2:17.

Class A

All five of Sidney's returning state champs made the semis as the Eagles tallied 1271/2 points on the first day.

Still, the western Montana teams made a good showing as 29 of the 60 semifinalists came from Northwestern A or Southwestern A teams.

Frenchtown and Whitefish each placed six wrestlers in the semis, while Libby and Polson had five apiece. Columbia Falls put four in the semis, Hamilton two and Corvallis one.

Libby (87) finished third to Cut Bank in the first-day team standings, followed by Columbia Falls (81), Polson (76), Frenchtown (67), and Whitefish (66).

Class A has the most returning individual state champs with 10. Sidney's Jesse Obergfell (105), Ryan Hecker (125), Byron Kuylen (130), Doug Copeland (140), Derek Fritz (145), and Gresh Melby (160) all won twice.

Columbia Falls senior Aric Tarr will get to go for three state titles. He's on a collision course with Frenchtown's Brandon Stedman, a 2004 champ, who's on the other side of the 119-pound semifinal bracket.

Polson's Logan Kugler did his part in the stacked 160-pound division with Melby and Havre's Evan Hinebauch, a '04 state champ from Class B-C Chinook. Also advancing was Corvallis' Caleb Cousins, who missed last winter's meet due to a misdiagnosed skin condition.

Polson 171-pounder Kevin Owen received a scare in his quarterfinal match. The Pirates senior leader met Havre's Dustin Haukenberry, a two-time state champ from the state of Washington, and barely escaped.

Hauckenberry led Owen 2-1 until the final 20 seconds when the four-time Rocky Mountain Classic champ took down the transfer.

Class B-C

Conrad advanced seven wrestlers into the semifinals, while Cut Bank tallied six qualifiers.

Even though it wasn't a great day for western Montana teams, nine individuals kept their championship hopes alive.

Leading the way was Florence heavyweight Paden Jenkins and Deer Lodge 130-pounder Sean Whitney, both of whom kept their unbeaten records going.

Jenkins has won all 34 of his matches by pin. His two pins on Saturday came in a combined 1:48.

Whitney had a close call in his quarterfinal match with Baker's Blake Hunter, but improved to 46-0 with an 8-7 win.

The Wardens' senior leader needed an escape with 17 seconds left to pull out the win. He trailed the match 5-2 entering the third, but tied it at 7-7 before getting the escape.

Superior's Tyler McGillivray won twice despite being held back by a nagging shoulder injury. The senior, whose only loss was an injury default at last week's Class B-C divisional, pinned his first opponent and decisioned another in moving his record to 33-1.

He wrestled with his torso wrapped and taped to his left bicep to keep his shoulder from popping out of its socket again.

McGillivray will have to face Shepherd's Tyler Gilfeather on Saturday. Gilfeather is attempting to become a three-time champ.

The rest of Class B-C's returning state champs all fared well. Cut Bank's Egan Black (105), Conrad's Thad Zempel (130), Caleb Lockyer (140) and Trent Zempel (152) all made the semis.
