Travis Derochowski averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and two assists as a junior for Western Mennonite High School in Salem, Ore. He says he chose Montana State over Utah, Washington, Washington State, San Diego and Pacific.
Derochowski said Montana State's coaching staff, the school's video-production program and world-class fly fishing sold him on Bozeman, despite the fact he hasn't visited MSU. His family visited Yellowstone National Park two years ago and fell in love with the area.
DILLON (AP) _ The Southwestern Montana Family YMCA's executive board has voted to break ground in June on the first phase of a 29,000-square-foot facility, despite being $250,000 short of a fundraising goal.
"We were just so close that we decided we just couldn't wait," said member Bill Hritsco. "We're taking a leap of faith."
The first phase, which will cost $2.4 million, will include a pool large enough to host competitive meets, locker rooms, offices, a therapy pool, a 2,000-square-foot fitness center and a mezzanine area that includes a walking track and a location for activities such as aerobics, karate and dance.
The board decided to begin construction now, rather than waiting a year and risk that construction costs could go up.
The second phase includes a 6,000-square-foot gymnasium. Plans call for completing the project within five years.
HELENA (AP) _ The Carroll College women's basketball team has signed two out-of-state post players, coach Shawn Nelson announced Wednesday.
The 6-foot Hannah Heidenriech of Post Falls, Idaho, averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds per game this past season, earning all-state honors. She led the 5A Class in rebounding.
"Hannah is awfully strong and competitive for a high school athlete," Nelson said. "She is a great rebounder and a very physical defender. She is not afraid to do the little things required to win."
Nikki Mills, a 6-foot-2 post from Powell, Wyo., earned all-conference honors in basketball as a junior and all-state honors in volleyball. She was named MVP of both the volleyball and basketball teams at Powell High School.
"Nikki is raw offensively, but possess tremendous upside because of her athletic and jumping ability," Nelson said.
