While many among us remember childhood summers as long and lazy, many kids these days hop from camp to camp, week to week, eagerly and busily sampling different sports and subjects.
There's something, it seems, for every interest - writing, sewing, basketball, soccer, aviation, cooking, you name it. The list below is just a sampler, collected in recent weeks from the folks who fill childhood summers with happy - and, yes, busy - memories.
The Montana Writing Project, a nationally recognized professional development organization for teachers dedicated to improving student writing by improving the teaching of writing, is offering the second annual Young Writers Camp for students entering grades 6-8. Participants will experiment with several genres, from poetry to nonfiction, and write to express themselves and to change their worlds. Participants will not only strengthen their writing but also experience the thrill of seeing their names in print and reading their work aloud in a local, public setting. Math camps
See and Learn Algebra Camp. The Intermountain Institute for Science and Applied Mathematics half-day algebra camps for children in grades 3-6. Unique approach teaches math skills through seeing and touching, introducing concepts years earlier than traditionally taught. It aims to build a solid foundation for reasoning with unknown numbers and developing an intuition for math. Camps will be held on the University of Montana campus on Aug. 8-12 and Aug. 15-19. Seasons Bereavement programs
A Camp to Remember, Camp Paxson, Seeley Lake. The goal is to provide a fun, supportive experience for kids grieving the death of a family member. For One Another Cancer Family Network invites Montana families battling cancer to enroll in a free summer camp getaway July 16 or 23. Camps are free for Montana families in the midst of a cancer diagnosis, adult or child. The University of Montana Band Camp, June 19-25, opportunity for musical and personal growth, offering the high school and junior high musician fulfilling and exciting experiences. Filmmaking camps
The International Wildlife Media Center and Film Festival Young Filmmakers Camp. Kids learn the fundamentals of videography, editing and filmmaking. The camp runs Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost is $250 per student and includes professional instruction and equipment. Students will work in groups to produce their own short film. Sol Surfers Kayak Camp, ages 11-16 and all ability levels. The goal of the camp is to provide an opportunity for kids to paddle throughout the summer and simultaneously increase their knowledge of kayaking technique and their awareness of the unique opportunities of the Missoula valley rivers - the Clark Fork, the Blackfoot and the Bitterroot. Tarkio Kayak Adventures kids camp, July 18-22, $650. All levels from novice to advanced. Our base on the Clark Fork River provides the ideal setting for a kayaking camp. Young paddlers spend three days developing a solid foundation of kayaking and river safety skills. Missoula Outdoor Learning Adventures Summer Camp is dedicated to active outdoor learning adventures each and every day. Participate in a variety of activities that include hiking, mountain biking, rafting, canoeing, swimming, rock climbing, exploring and camping out. Alberton Gorge Ranch Youth Rafting Camp by Montana River Guides, for ages 11-17. The camps are based out of whitewater rafting headquarters at the Alberton Gorge Ranch, 30 minutes west of Missoula on the Clark Fork River. We integrate learning river skills with personal development in a fun, challenging setting. During the four-day and five-day camps, participants learn the fundamentals of whitewater rafting and river safety while developing their confidence, self-esteem, leadership, and teamwork. Little Grizzly Football's 10th annual "FUNdamental" summer camp will be offered June 27-30. Camp is for youngsters entering second through eighth grade with second- through fifth-graders meeting in the mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and fifth- through eighth-graders meeting from 1:30-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
