Meteorologist says fog likely here all week
By BETSY COHEN of the Missoulian

Get used to the fog or get out of the Missoula Valley because the National Weather Service predicts Missoula won't see the sky until Saturday - and that's an optimistic forecast.

“I don't see things improving for days - there's just no change,” said meteorologist Mike W. Johnson. “The Missoula Valley has very little hope of breaking out of this pattern until next week.”

With the fog comes slick roads, freezing temperatures, limited visibility and an opaque 150-foot thick wall that is blocking airplanes from landing.

It's the busiest week of the year for air travel, but the Missoula International Airport is at a relative standstill. According to air traffic control, three planes were able to come and go on Saturday, but by Sunday, only one airplane left the runaway.

The only action at the airport is a steady flow of buses that are coming and going to haul travelers to airports in Helena, Great Falls and Bozeman. None of those cities are experiencing Missoula's weather.

If you are trying to get information about flight schedules, don't call local airline or airport administrators. Commercial airline personnel are referring all inquires to their toll-free automated information phone numbers, and airport officials on Sunday were referring all inquires to the airlines.

The good news is that Mount Sentinel hikers are reporting sunshine just above the M, and Stevensville residents claim there's blue sky in their neighborhood. Johnson said he's told there's no fog on the outskirts of Rock Creek and at the edge of Superior.

“What you see will be with us for a while,” he said. “My advice? Get on the road, but be careful driving.”
