NAU runner wins NCAA women's cross country

TERRA HAUTE, Ind. - The third time was the charm for Northern Arizona distance runner Johanna Nilsson.

The junior from Sweden won the 2005 NCAA women's cross country race by running six kilometers in a championship course record 19:33.9, finishing 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Caroline Bierbaum of Columbia-Barnard.

Nilsson placed 12th in 2002 and 10th in 2003. The Northern Arizona team - the only Big Sky Conference squad to receive an at-large bid to the 2005 championship - finished 12th.

Weber State freshman Katie Bowen finished 81st with a time of 20:57.0.

On the men's side Idaho State senior Paul Hoffman - the only Big Sky runner in the race - placed 157th over 10 kilometers in a time of 31:29.4.
