Lady Griz heat up, roll over Cats
By BILL SCHWANKE of Missoulian.com

With the exception of Katie Edwards, the shots weren't going down early for the Montana Lady Griz Friday night.

But after a 5-for-20 start from the field Montana got things cooking for the rest of the evening and wound up cruising to a 90-65 win over the rival Montana State Bobcats at Dahlberg Arena.

Edwards, who needed five stitches late in the first half after being elbowed above her left eye by Bobcat post player Whitney Connolly, hit better from long range (6-8 beyond the arc) than short (1-8 elsewhere) on her way to a game-high 20 points. So did her team which shot 52 percent from three-point range but just 43 percent overall.

Edwards, one of two UM seniors, got lots of help from the younger set as freshmen Mandy Morales and Tamara Guardipee chipped in 18 and 14 points respectively.

Montana State was led in scoring by Connolly with 16, Alyssa Nelson with 13 and Jenny Heringer with 11. Individual rebounding honors went to Montana's other senior, Jody McLeod, with 10 caroms, eight on the offensive end.

One major key in the game, especially when the Lady Griz were struggling with their shooting early in the game, was turnovers. Montana took much better care of the basketball, turning it over just seven times compared with 17 for MSU.

The win lifted Montana's conference record to 5-3 and their overall mark to 16-5. The Cats fell to 1-7 and 2-18.

Next week both Montana teams hit the road to play Sacramento State and Northern Arizona.
