Sometimes, small presents come in big boxes.

At least they did for Megan Boniecki on Thursday night at the Lady Griz-Eastern Washington basketball game in Dahlberg Arena.

Her boyfriend, Dan Beard, told her that for her birthday they and a bunch of friends would go to the basketball game. It was the perfect setup.

Friends had suggested that Beard propose to Boniecki during a basketball game. One of them set up the proposal by calling and getting permission to do it at halftime, Beard said.

Allison Bender, an assistant marketing director at the University of Montana, said she thought the proposal idea was cool and gave her blessing.

“When we got to the game,” Boniecki said, “a woman approached and told me I was the winner for the night.” Boniecki was supposed to choose a friend and meet the woman on the basketball court at halftime.

Boniecki chose her boyfriend - and best friend - to go onto the court with her. The two, now freshmen at UM, had dated for two years at Florence High School.

Once on the court at halftime, Bender gave Boniecki a big red box and told her to open it.

“At the very bottom,” Boniecki said, “was a ring box.”

“I picked it up and opened it. I turned around and he (Beard) was down on one knee behind me. He asked me to marry him.”

The proposal may have caught Boniecki by surprise.

“She stood there for a bit. I think she was in shock,” Beard said.

Lest there be any question:

“I said yes, of course,” she said.
