Inspectors stopped 176 commercial buses and big-rig trucks Monday and Tuesday along U.S. Highway 191, and only 16 passed with no safety violations.
Seventy-seven violations were so serious that the rig and driver were not allowed to continue on their routes. Park officials said those responsible could face fines ranging from $200 to over $1,200 for multiple offenses.
Besides safety problems, four illegal immigrants were discovered during the inspection. They were turned over to federal customs officials.
BUTTE - A Butte man pleaded guilty Thursday to shooting another man multiple times in the back in November.
Cody Lucier, 18, faces up to 100 years in prison for attempted murder. He admitted in District Court that he shot James Dodd Jr. three or four times in the early-morning hours of Nov. 11.
Lucier was 17 at the time of the shooting but was charged as an adult because of the seriousness of the offense. He turned 18 this month.
Dodd survived the shooting but still suffers from his wounds, said Butte-Silver Bow Deputy County Attorney Samm Cox.
Dodd was involved in an altercation with Lucier and his friends before Lucier returned with a .22-caliber rifle and shot him, Cox said.
Lucier remains in jail on $150,000 bail. Judge Kurt Krueger will sentence him after a pre-sentence investigation is complete.
HELENA - Ten Montana residents have been awarded $25,000 scholarships to attend graduate school as part of the Montana State Library's Professional Education and Employment for Librarians program.
Montana State Librarian Darlene Staffeldt said the goal of the program is to increase the number of librarians in Montana who have obtained master's degrees in library science.
Scholarship recipients are required to begin graduate school through the University of Washington distance MLS program this fall and complete the degree by 2009. They then must work two years in at a Montana public school or tribal college library.
The scholarships are funded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services Recruiting and Educating Librarians for the 21st Century program.
