2006 electionsLetter writers should take their time
It could be distressing, if I allowed, the vitriol spewed by many of the authors of letters to the editor when writing about political candidates. I have a suggestion for you. If you are inclined to vote for a particular candidate, list the reason why you would vote for your particular candidate and don't waste your time trashing the other candidate(s). I know that most of you are expressing your opinions based on emotion rather than logic or facts. So do some independent research on your own before you start exposing your ignorance in a public forum. If you have all these pent-up feelings and emotions, take a nice long walk instead of taking it out on some candidate. You'll feel much better.Mark King, Missoula
Mineral County has great GOP team
You know how it is with football. You will look on one team with admiration and say, “They're good.” Then you see another and must admit, “They're better.”The Democratic candidates are good; the Republicans simply better.
Consider Mary Yarnall, Republican candidate for treasurer/superintendent of schools. Mary has qualities of leadership rarely seen: warm intelligence, patience and a keen understanding of how to serve all county residents without antagonism toward anyone.
Wife, mother, sincere Christian woman, Mary is willing and able to make a long term commitment to county service.
Then there's Dennis Hildebrand, GOP candidate for county commissioner. Dennis is known widely for decades of volunteer service. Volunteer fire chief, ambulance driver, charter revision committee member - if you need help with almost anything, call Dennis.
A week ago, for the first time, I helped unload a food order at the county food bank. Who was there helping ahead of me? Dennis. Who did the person who runs the food bank count on unquestioningly? Dennis.
Open government. Full service 365 days a year. That's what a vote for Hildebrand means.
Next, state Rep. Gordon Hendrick (HD14), who is running as a Republican for re-election. As with Dennis, Gordon gives and gives, and takes, literally, nothing in return.
As a state representative, Gordon keeps the interests of his constituents and all the people of the state foremost in his mind. He sees the big picture and seamlessly uses this vision to the benefit of his district.
Honor for veterans. Tough crime laws. Compassion toward those in need, while realizing that people needing help also need to keep their pride. These are a few of Rep. Hendrick's priorities.
Hendrick is important for District 14 and the entire state.
And more of better Š no, best. Sheriff Hugh Hopwood, Republican candidate, combines tough law enforcement professionalism with a caring heart. Hugh wants the county safe and crime free but also is dedicated to preserving citizen's rights. This is a sheriff who does more with very limited resources than almost any law enforcement administration around.
Yes, the opposition is good. But these four are better Š the best.

Scared Republicans lying about Tester
I have finally come to the conclusion that the Republicans are just scared about the upcoming election. Why else would they be sending mailings lying about Jon Tester's stance on protecting children from Internet predators?Jon Tester voted against a bill that was opposed by librarians because the protection for children in libraries was already in place.
Jon Tester opposed redundancy within the government regulations along with 18 other Republicans who also opposed the bill. In fact, only 12 people actually voted in favor of the redundancy. Let's ask why the Republicans are scared of the whole story.
