Big Sky suspends Portland State gridder

OGDEN, Utah - Portland State linebacker Kenneth Mackins has been suspended for one game for punching a Sacramento State player during last Saturday’s Big Sky Conference game.

Mackins’ action drew a 15-yard penalty but no ejection. League commissioner Doug Fullerton said the conference “reserves the right to take action in cases where a flagrant foul takes place on the field,” adding that the situation warranted a suspension based on NCAA football rules.

If Portland State earns an at-large bid to the 2006 I-AA playoffs Mackins will serve the suspension Nov. 25. If the Vikings do not receive a playoff bid Mackins will sit out the first game of the 2007 season.

If that is the case it will be treated as his first fight of the 2007 season, meaning if Mackins is involved in another fight next season he would be suspended for the rest of the campaign.

Mackins has 24 catches for 424 yards and four touchdowns this season. He also returned a kick for a touchdown against Montana.

The Vikings beat Sacramento State 13-7.
