Police, UM plan for Griz-Cat game fallout
By ROB CHANEY of the Missoulian

Local law enforcement is preparing for the usual crop of the unusual as the annual Griz-Cat football game weekend approaches.

“People want to come and share in the excitement and the rivalry,” University of Montana Public Safety Director Jim Lemcke said Thursday. “We just add some people to make sure everything is OK.”

While Missoula police calls about disorderly conduct and public drinking go up 14 percent on home football game days, city and university officers agree some games are special. While Washington-Grizzly Stadium officially holds 23,183 fans, many more come to town to watch in bars or visit friends.

“For Cat-Griz and Homecoming, we get so many people who show up without tickets,” Lemcke said. “We have to manage the tailgates even during the game, which is not normal. And we have to be ready for the people who want to get into the stadium without the luxury of a ticket.”

Many visitors from Bozeman and elsewhere will be arriving in Missoula on Friday afternoon or evening. While much of the activity is focused around downtown restaurants and bars, the city's quality-of-life officers also are on alert for house parties that get out of control.

Missoula Police Capt. Dick Lewis said city officers plan for extra calls Friday, Saturday and sometimes part of Sunday.

“We've met with the (Missoula) Tavern Owners Association to keep in mind occupancy standards and open-container laws,” Lewis said. “It's good for the economy and good for business. We understand that our goal is to provide the safety to the community.”

Lemcke reminded fans that no one will be allowed on the field of Washington-Grizzly Stadium until after the visiting team has departed.
