Closson, Rogers pace Lady Griz over Zags

MISSOULA - The Montana Lady Griz rode the hot hands of Johanna Closson and Sonya Rogers and a tight second-half defense to an 88-78 win over previously-unbeaten Gonzaga Sunday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena.

The win gives Montana a 2-0 record while the Zags - who earlier had beaten Utah, Cal-Davis and Sacramento State - fell to 3-1.

Closson and Rogers combined to hit 9 of 11 3-point shots and together scored 41 points as five Montana players wound up in double figures.

Gonzaga had the hot hand in the first half, overcoming an early Montana lead to take a 43-38 lead at the intermission.

The Lady Griz outrebounded Gonzaga 46-40 and wound up outshooting the Zags 44 to 38 percent from the floor after Montana hit on just 36 percent of its first-half shots.

Gonzaga - on fire early - managed just 38 percent shooting in the second half after hitting at an even 50 percent clip over the first 20 minutes.

Closson took game scoring honors with 25. Rogers tallied 16, while Tamara Guardipee, Mandy Morales and Britney Lohman chipped in 10 apiece.

Gonzaga got 23 points from Heather Bowman along with 15 from Jami Bjorklund and 13 from Katy Ridenour.

Guardipee led all rebounders with 12 while Lohman added 8 for Montana. Gonzaga’s top performers on the glass were Bowman with nine and Bjorklund with 8.

Next up for Montana is a meeting next Saturday with Davidson College at the Ohio State tournament in Columbus. The Lady Griz are hoping a victory will propel them into a Sunday matchup with the national powerhouse Buckeyes.
