Ian Smart scored a touchdown for the Lions, who had the best regular-season record and won their fifth Grey Cup. It is their first title since beating Montreal in 2000.
“I can't even describe it, it just feels so good,” said Lions receiver Geroy Simon, the CFL's most outstanding player. “They did a great job of covering me, but we knew our big guys were going to step up and make some plays.”
“I was going to do what it takes,” he said. “We just feel we deserved it. We were the best team all year. In my opinion, the best team won.”
The Lions celebrated hard, splitting the Grey Cup after it was presented to them at midfield.
Robert Edwards ran in a TD for the Alouettes, but fumbled on the 1 to kill a late comeback attempt with 4:06 left.
Damon Duval kicked a field goal, and the defense forced two safeties for Montreal, which was in its fifth Grey Cup in seven years. The Alouettes have only a title in 2002 to show for it.
“We fought hard in the second half, we battled for one half of football and outplayed them in that half,” Montreal slotback Ben Cahoon said. “It's unfortunate we came out slow.”
McCallum tied the mark that three other kickers share.
“The guys did really well. They got me in position, I just did my job,” he said. “I don't know what to say, it hasn't really sunk in yet.”
Montreal's Anthony Calvillo was 20-of-41 for 234 yards, pushing his career yardage total in the championship game to 1,468 yards. That broke Doug Flutie's record of 1,421.
Cahoon made 11 receptions, giving him 31 in his Grey Cup career. That broke the mark of 29 previously held by former Montreal player Hal Patterson.
