Sky honors Carpenter again

Kicker Dan Carpenter of the Montana Grizzlies has been named Big Sky Conference special teams player of the week for the third time this season. Carpenter kicked two key field goals and punted six times for a 42.7-yard average as the Griz downed Montana State 13-7 Saturday.

OGDEN, Utah - Montana kicker Dan Carpenter has been named Big Sky Conference special teams player of the week for the third time this season.

The junior from Helena hit field goals from 37 and 42 yards out as the second-ranked Grizzlies claimed undisputed first place in the final conference standings with a 13-7 win over Montana State Saturday in Missoula.

Carpenter's second field goal came with 6:53 left in the game. He also punted six times for an average of 42.7 yards.

Northern Arizona quarterback Jason Murrietta took the offensive honor for the second week in a row and the third time this season after making more history in the Lumberjacks' season-ending 54-3 win over Northern Colorado. Murrietta - a Walter Payton Award candidate - completed 29 of 41 passes for 381 yards and five touchdowns and also ran for 60 yards as NAU piled up 37 first downs and 667 yards of total offense.

Murrietta wound up second in Big Sky history with 94 career touchdown passes. He also moved into sixth place in league history with 10,726 yards passing. He had a school-record 34 touchdown passes this season with just five interceptions.

Northern Arizona linebacker Chris Hunsaker and Weber State defensive tackle Rio Stotler are the co-defensive players of the week.

Hunsaker capped his career with 10 total tackles including five for loss and also had three quarterback sacks. He finished the season with 62 total tackles and leads the Big Sky with 11.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss. His 1.91 tackles for loss per game is tied for the national lead.

Stottler registered nine total tackles including seven solo stops in Weber State’s 30-27 win over rival Idaho State. He had three sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

Montana's other nominees were wide receiver Eric Allen on offense and strong safety Colt Anderson on defense.
