Montana leads Big Sky men’s all-sports, Presidents Cup races

OGDEN, Utah - With fall sports completed Montana is leading the race for the 2006-07 Sterling Savings Presidents Cup, an annual Big Sky Conference award recognizing a combination of academic and athletic achievement.

Montana is averaging 13 points per sport followed by Sacramento State at 10.8 and two-time trophy winner Weber State with 10.

Points are determined based on regular-season team finishes for soccer, volleyball and football while points are awarded in men’s and women’s cross country based on the Big Sky championship meet.

The standings will be updated once academic information from the first semester is completed.

This is the fifth year the Sterling Savings Presidents Cup will be awarded. Weber State won the first two while Montana State edged Northern Arizona in a tiebreaker to claim the 2004-05 Cup. Northern Arizona won a tiebreaker against Weber State to claim the 2005-06 cup.

The Big Sky also awards men’s and women’s all-sports trophies based solely on team points awarded in conference-sponsored sports.

Montana leads the men’s race with an average of 15 points per sport. Montana State is second at 13.75 per sport. Sacramento State leads the women’s race with 12.3 points per sport with Montana second at 11.67.

Men’s and women’s all-sports trophy points are just two of the five criteria used in determining the Presidents Cup winner to be awarded in June.

Other established criteria are individual team grade point averages, graduation rates and number of all-conference performers with a grade point average above 3.0.
