Griz athletes post highest grades on record

MISSOULA - University of Montana athletes have posted their highest average grade point average since the athletic department started tracking GPAs in the early 1990s.

The fall semester 2006 average GPA was 3.02, which also was well above the campus average of 2.84.

“(Since) the fact that the primary goal of the department is the academic performance of our student-athletes, we are very fortunate that our coaches recruit quality student-athletes and support their academic performance,” said Jean Gee, associate athletic director.

Women’s tennis posted the highest team GPA for the fall term with a 3.44 followed closely by women’s golf at 3.38.

Seven of the university’s 14 varsity teams had GPAs over 3.0 for the fall semester.
