MISSOULA - Montana head football coach Bobby Hauck has signed a new one-year contract with an option to re-negotiate a multi-year deal after the 2007 football season.

“This is very positive news and will allow us to move forward,” UM athletic director Jim O’Day said Friday. “It should end any speculation or distraction and will give us more time to address areas within the proposed three-year agreement that might be of concern to Bobby or the University.”

Previously one-year contracts were the only option for a head coach in football or men’s and women’s basketball at the University of Montana. Last fall the Montana Board of Regents approved a resolution allowing UM and Montana State to offer three-year deals to the head coaches in its three major revenue-generating sports.

Hauck - beginning his fifth year at his alma matter - has compiled a 41-13 record at Montana including four straight appearances in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs and four straight Big Sky Conference titles. His Grizzly teams have compiled a league slate of 24-5.

In 2004 Hauck led the Grizzlies to the I-AA title game against James Madison. Last fall Hauck

guided UM to the semifinal round of the playoffs as the Grizzlies posted a 12-2 record.
