SOME SPRING JAM: Let's have a toast to winter's goodbye with this hot stuff
By JAMIE KELLY of the Missoulian

At the TRAIL HEAD, 221 E. Front St: Photographs by Lindsey Nelson of Peru, Nepal, India and Chile. Pictured here is “Trainport.”
Call it "the Entertainer cover curse," but whenever we do a spring arts preview, winter seems to hang around like a single uncle on Thanksgiving.

We're hoping the curse - and the winter - are lifted this year. There are hot happenings coming up, after all.

Along with the springtime giants such as April's UM Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival (this year featuring Yellowjackets sax player Bob Mintzer and other jazz biggies), and the International Wildlife Film Festival in May, there is a host of off-the-wall and unique events scheduled at venues around western Montana.

Take, for example, the Spike and Mike Sick and Twisted Animation Festival coming to the Crystal Theatre in late April. If you think "Family Guy" and "South Park" are edgy, well - you're going to be hurled off a cliff. Don't believe me? Got to http://www.spikeandmike.com. The animation festival fits in perfectly with the new ethos of the 515 and Crystal: Strange. Odd. And fascinating.

Spring also marks two more Missoula Symphony concerts - and a chance for you to view the final two "applicants" (that is, guest conductors) who are auditioning to become the next musical director of the MSO.

And this spring we'll be celebrating two Missoula women who've made a tremendous impact on the local arts scene - and who continue to exert their influence today.

The annual "Odyssey of the Stars" this year will honor longtime UM vocal instructor Esther England and former Sentinel High School drama instructor Margaret Johnson, in an evening billed as "A Tribute to Two Grand Dames."

So as you pore over this giant list of spring arts, think warm thoughts.

This year, we're lifting the curse.
