Posted on March 6

By The Associated Press

A glance at Republican budget bills dealing with public safety and the university system, compared to the governor's request:

- The Department of Corrections is given $42 million less than the governor's proposal, based primarily on assumptions the system won't get as many new prisoners as expected.

- The Department of Justice is given $9 million less, including an exclusion of $3 million for a legal fight with Wyoming over water rights.

- The Department of Labor gets about $872,000 more, but the agency disagreed with cuts to its research division.

- The Department of Military Affairs gets $768,000 less, including a reduction in hazardous material response.

- The higher education budget is reduced about $3 million overall.
