WASHINGTON - A little piece of Montana will light up the U.S. Capitol in 2008.

The state's congressional delegation said Thursday that Bitterroot National Forest will donate a 70-foot tree to stand in front of the Capitol and also about 65 smaller trees for other federal agency headquarters.

According to the delegation, Bitterroot forest employees will scout "candidate trees" that are the right size, shape and color. The tree will probably be a fir or a spruce.

The Architect of the Capitol will then visit western Montana in the summer of 2008 to choose the tree. It will be cut down in October and hauled to Washington by truck.

This year's tree will come from Vermont, according to the Architect of the Capitol's office. The Kootenai National Forest donated a Capitol tree in 1989.
