On an overcast Saturday at Dornblaser Field, the Montana track and field squads zipped through the 13th annual Al Manuel Invitational and left their first outdoor meet with a decidedly sunny outlook.

“It was a good day,” said jumper Ryan Grinell, who swept the high jump and triple jump and helped the Griz to dual wins over Montana State (120-76) and Eastern Washington (98-96). “Always the first outdoor meet of the year is about getting your feet wet.

“I felt like I got a pretty good start.”

Most of the Grizzlies could say the same, especially the women, who downed MSU 110-81 and Eastern 105-86. In all, 18 Griz qualified for the Big Sky Championships May 9-12 in Pocatello, Idaho; 13 won events Saturday.

“I think we're going to have a strong team this year,” said junior Nicole Walker, who won the 800 and ran a leg on UM's winning 1,600-meter relay. “Stronger than we have been ranked.

“This year we've been trying to really pull together as a team. In the past we've kind of been every man for himself - or woman.”

The thinclads, picked seventh in the Big Sky women's race and fifth in the men's, have been building camaraderie through team meetings and barbecues. You couldn't argue with the results this weekend: On Friday junior Curtis Bean threw the hammer 184 feet, nine inches to qualify for the Midwest Regional May 25-26 in Iowa; freshman Kara DeWalt started Saturday off by winning her first-ever 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Montana also had two wins from junior standout Loni Perkins-Judisch, in the 400 and 200. Her 400 time of 55.41 was just two hundredths of a second off the meet record, set by Idaho State's Selena Frazier in 2002. Perkins-Judisch also clocked 24.62 in the 200, just .13 off the record.

If their competition was a bit undermanned - Montana State redshirted sprinters Steve Heberly and Dan Johnson - so were the Griz. Montana has yet to work sprinter James Brown, who had surgery for a sports hernia earlier in March, back to full speed, and multi-event standout Chris Hicks sat out the meet with an illness.

“He's our best all-around athlete, really,” Montana coach Tom Raunig said of the freshman from Whitefish. “Without James, we're a little thin in the sprints.”

Raunig hopes to have James back for the Eastern Washington Invitational next weekend. But this weekend drew no complaints.

“For an early season meet, where you're trying to keep everybody healthy and not over-race people, it's going real well,” he said.

While Bean had a nice start, his hammer throw was a distant second to Eastern standout David Paul, who marked 214-2. Paul went onto sweep the discus and shot put on Saturday.

For UM, one hiccup came in the aforementioned women's 800, where freshman Brooke Andrus - Montana's leader in the event - took a tumble just 150 meters in.

“I saw her go down right next to me,” said Walker, who won in 2:18.69. “It was kind of freaky. Some girls were pushing in and we were trying to go out around the crowd.”

Andrus got up and surged to as high as third, but said she began to hyperventilate and dropped out.

“Brooke passed me, and I was like, ‘Go, go!' because I wanted her to qualify,” said junior Ashley Colbrese. “Then she just kind of, I don't know, died. She was probably on a big adrenaline rush. She just came flying by.”

Still, Walker and Colbrese added big points for UM.

“Huge confidence boost,” said Walker. “I was running so slow on indoor. This was like six seconds better than my best in indoor.”

Grinnell, meanwhile, cruised through the high jump, clearing 6-8 on his first attempt. The sophomore then went for the regional qualifying mark of 6-10þ, as did MSU freshman Charlie Hirning. Neither made it.

“It was pretty close,” said Grinnell, who won the triple jump at 48-2. “I felt good. There's still a few things I have to fix. But it will come.”

“I can't complain about the results. It was a pretty good, solid effort.”

NOTES: MSU's Ellie Rudy and Eastern's Carolee Gutierrez set meet records, Rudy in the pole vault (clearing 13-4 fi) and Gutierrez in the javelin (167-9). Rudy broke the mark of 13-4 set by MSU's Shannon Agee-Jones in 2002; Gutierrez surpassed the mark of 165-8 set by EWU's Stephanie Ulmer in 2006.

For UM, senior Halliday Quist (triple jump) and freshman Jessa Linford (high jump) won their events and qualified for the Big Sky meet. Kim Tritz was second in the steeplechase, Shannon Johnson was third in the 5,000 and Abbey Effertz was fourth in the shot, and all three met the Big Sky standards.

Johnson, Tritz and DeWalt also qualified for the 10,000 meters on the basis of their marks in the steeplechase or 5,000. Junior Bailey Cox won the long jump.

On the men's side, senior Matt Larson (high hurdles), junior Dan Bingham (steeplechase) and freshman Landon Bowery (400 hurdles) all won events with Big Sky-qualifying marks. Junior Cody Henning also qualified while finishing second in the 200, as did juniors Eli Hermann (second in the steeplechase) and Evan Wilson (sixth in the shot), as well as freshman Wade Boss (javelin, fifth).

Ryan Flaherty, a senior, added a UM win in the 800.
