Missoula County Commissioners have unanimously selected Tim Furey to replace his son Kevin as representative of House District 91 at the Montana Legislature’s special session.

Barbara Evans, Jean Curtiss and Bill Carey interviewed the Missoula County Democratic Central Committee’s three nominees Wednesday morning and chose the elder Furey over Nina Cramer and Sue Malek.

The special session, called by Gov. Brian Schweitzer after the Legislature adjourned April 27 without approving a state budget, opens Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in Helena.

“There wasn’t really an awful lot of discussion,” Curtiss said. “(Tim Furey) just kind of rose to the top of the three, but they all would have done a fine job.”

Kevin Furey, a two-time legislator at age 24, was called to officer’s training for the Army Reserves in Oklahoma. He requested his father take his place at the special session.

Curtiss said Furey’s announcement that he would run for the same seat next year was a factor in the decision, as were the facts that he lived in the district and had his son’s endorsement.
