Second time around for new UM education dean

MISSOULA - For the second time this decade Roberta “Bobbie” Evans has been named dean of the University of Montana School of Education.

Evans, who has served as the education school’s interim dean since July 2006, was dean from 2001 to 2003 before choosing to work as a professor of educational leadership from 2003 to 2006. She was one of three candidates interviewed for the position and will officially start June 1.0

“Bobbie brings to her new position the expertise and experience of a seasoned professional and an engaging academic,” UM president George Dennison said.

Evans has been filling the interim dean’s position since Paul Rowland left last spring for a similar position at the University of Idaho.

She first came to UM in 1989 as an education assistant professor and director of UM’s Administrative Internship Program. During 1991-98 she chaired the university’s Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling. Evans also directed UM’s Academy for Curriculum Leadership and Technology from 1994 to 1996. She was promoted to professor of educational leadership in 1998.

Evans received her doctorate in educational administration and higher education from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1988 and earned her master’s in educational administration from Nevada in 1985 and her undergraduate degree in English/language arts education from Nebraska’s Chadron State College in 1978.

She started her teaching career at Winner High School in South Dakota during 1978-82. She taught English at Sinte Gleska College in Winner during the summers from 1980 to 1982.

Evans then taught at Reno’s Robert McQueen High School from 1983 to 1987. While there she also co-directed Reno’s Washoe High School Learning Center.

She then became a research fellow at the Research and Educational Planning Center at the University of Nevada, Reno, during 1988-89.
