Royce Engstrom currently is the provost and vice president for academic affairs at USD in Vermillion and teaches in the school’s chemistry department.
At UM Engstrom will serve as the second highest-ranking executive officer on campus and will work closely with President George Dennison to provide direction and leadership for the University.
He has been a professor in the USD chemistry department since 1989 after serving as an assistant professor for 10 years. He was department chair from 1984 to 1995.
Engstrom earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2005 he completed Harvard University’s course in institutional executive management.
“Royce brings to his new position the background, experience and expertise of a seasoned professional and an engaging academic,” Dennison said. “I have great confidence that he will help immensely to sustain the momentum of the University of Montana.”
Dennison, currently serving as UM’s interim provost, said Engstrom will assume the permanent position on or before Aug. 1.
