Mavericks up win streak to 10
By the Missoulian

HELENA - Missoula's hitters are making things very easy for their pitchers.

The Mavs continued to swing torrid bats in a nonconference sweep of Helena in American Legion baseball action Sunday afternoon. The Mavs won the opener 15-0 and the nightcap 14-3.

The Mavs (24-10) have won 10 straight and have outscored their opponents 108-9 over the last seven games.

“I would say we're swinging the bats pretty well right now,” Missoula manager Brent Hathaway understated. “They're getting hot, gaining confidence and having fun playing. That's a great combination.

“Almost as impressive is that we're playing very good defense. (Infielder) Travis Johnsen is playing about as well as I've seen a kid play for me. He's not letting anything get by him and he sets the tone for the other guys.”

The Mavs banged out 16 hits in the opener, including three apiece by Dan Belet, Mac Cuffe and Chris Bartenhagen. A six-run sixth stopped the game by virtue of the 10-run margin rule.

Cuffe and Taylor Nordby had triples in the opener while Bartenhagen slammed the first of his two home runs for the day.

Cody Burgmeier went the distance on the hill to pick up the win.

The Mavs again notched 16 hits in the nightcap, including doubles by Taylor King, Burgmeier, Conor Dwyer and Nordby. Bartenhagen and King smacked homers.

Max Smith went the distance on the hill to pick up the win.

Missoula returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Kalispell at 6 p.m. at Lindborg-Cregg Field.
