“We're excited to have a coach of Jim Svoboda's caliber joining our staff,” Ash said. “Jim and I go way back. We have coached against each other, recruited against each other, and I have watched him win national championships. I have great respect for him, and he brings a standard of excellence to our student-athletes both on and off the field.”
Svoboda served at UCLA from 2004-07. He was a member of the staff that turned around one of the lowest ranked offenses in the nation in 2003 to one of the highest in 2005.
“I'm excited to be at a highly respected university like Montana State,” Svoboda said. “I want to help continue the great tradition of I-AA football in Bozeman, and I look forward to working with a coach the caliber of Rob Ash, who I truly believe is one of the finest coaches at any level, and the staff has assembled.”
While at Westwood, Svoboda was part of a staff that made three consecutive bowl appearances and last fall upset No. 2-ranked USC in its final regular-season game.
From 1994-2004, Svoboda served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Northwest Missouri State. He helped guide NWM to national championships in 1998 and 1999.
For six seasons, Svoboda's offense averaged over 450 yards and 40 points per game. For his efforts, Svoboda was named the American Football Coaches Magazine Offensive Coordinator of the Year in 1998.
Svoboda graduated from Iowa's Northwestern College in 1983 with a degree in psychology and physical education. He then earned a master's in physical education from Eastern New Mexico in 1986.
He served as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan from 1986-93; running backs coach at Eastern New Mexico from 1985-86; offensive line/strength coach at Dana College from 1984-85; and running backs coach at Northwestern College from 1983-84.
