The four-day event marks the 201st anniversary of the stop of the Lewis and Clark Expedition at the national historic landmark near Lolo.
The Travelers’ Rest Brigade, a local group of Lewis and Clark re-enactors, will be on site each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., providing a hands-on look at history. The group will perform many demonstrations, including fire starting, bullet making and leather work.
At 7 p.m. Monday, Flynn will present “Lewis and Clark: Off the Map.” This 30-minute program will explore how Lewis and Clark found their way through the Bitterroot Valley in 1805.
At 7 p.m. Tuesday, it will be “What a Rush: The Story of a U.S. Founder.” Flynn will look into the life of Dr. Benjamin Rush, one of the leading voices in the early years of the United States, and whose medical advice to Meriwether Lewis was integral in the location of the Travelers’ Rest campsite.
Activities specifically for children will be available each day. Traditional games, a Travelers’ Rest scavenger hunt, a Salish history timeline, a Lewis and Clark matching game and other activities will be held during the four days. These informal events are included in park admission.
More than 20 interpretive programs are also offered daily through the summer. The programs are held on the hour between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
On Tuesday, the park will kick off its weekly “Kids Days.” From 9 a.m. to noon each Tuesday through August kids can take part in an organized morning of fun and educational activities. The first Kids Days will be “Junior Scientists” n children will take part in a mock archaeology dig, a nature walk and journaling and observation. The cost for Kids Days is $10 per child.
Travelers’ Rest State Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through August. The park is located half a mile west of Lolo on U.S. Highway 12. A program schedule is available at www.travelersrest.org.
