Mission Valley gets retribution from Gallatin Valley

LIBBY - The Mission Valley Mariners got a little payback Wednesday against the team that eliminated them from last year's state Class A American Legion baseball tournament.

The M's downed the Gallatin Valley Outlaws 10-2 in opening-round action at this year's tourney.

Jon Rausch led the Mission Valley offense with back-to-back home runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Rausch drove in six runs and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Eric Locke also homered in the contest and finished 2-for-4.

Brandon Thompson pitched eight innings of five-hit ball and allowed just one earned run for the win. The 6-foot-7 right hander struck out 15 batters and walked four and improved to 8-1.

The Mariners move on to Thursday's quarterfinals to face Vauxhall, Alberta at 7:30 p.m.

Sidney and Dillon also advanced to the quarterfinals after winning their opening-round games. The two teams play at 4:30 p.m.

Laurel and Gallatin Valley face off in the 10 a.m. loser-out game. Great Falls and Libby follow in the 1 p.m. loser-out contest.

Dillon 5, Libby 3

The Dillon Cubs fought off a late rally for the opening round win.

Drake Waltner hit a double and singled twice and Jackson Berkram was 2-for-4 to lead the Cubs at the plate.

Tim Goins captured his 19th win of the year after pitching a three-run complete game. Goins struck out six and walked one.

Libby was led by Nate Peltier's two-hit night.

Sidney 20, Great Falls 9

Despite some poor fielding the Sidney Patriots were able to down the Great Falls Stallions in first-round action.

The Patriots had seven errors in the game but made up for their defensive struggles with 19 hits. Kelsey Brown had four hits and five RBIs to lead Sidney at the plate.

Jake Mansch hit a two-run double to lead the Stallions.

Vauxhall, Alberta 9, Laurel 3

The Vauxhall, Alberta Elks used a 12-hit attack for an opening-round win against the Laurel Dodgers.

Jaden Odland hit a three-run homer in the fourth and Brendan Miller followed with a solo shot to help the Elks break a 2-2 stalemate.

Jade Stricker was 2-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs to lead Laurel from the batters box.
