Gragg named to Grizzly Hall of Fame
By the Missoulian

MISSOULA - Former University of Montana football great and National Football League standout Scott Gragg has been selected to the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame, UM announced Friday.

Gragg, a three-time all-Big Sky Conference pick and two-time All-American at offensive tackle, will be inducted at a time to be determined by his coaching and work schedule. Gragg will soon begin his second season teaching and serving as the head football coach at his former high school in Silverton, Ore.

“This is something that I looked forward to, and was hopeful about, for a long time,” Gragg said. “I've always cherished my time in Missoula and I look forward to being up there with other Grizzly greats.”

After his standout career at UM, Gragg was a second-round pick of the New York Giants in the 1995. Among Grizzlies, only former lineman Steve Okoniewski has been drafted as high.

Gragg played 11 years in the NFL for the Giants, San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets before retiring in 2005. He played in 171 NFL games, at one point starting 112 straight. He was named second-team All-Pro by Football Digest in 2001, when he was with the 49ers.

“Lurch” - so nicknamed because of his 6-foot-9, 305-pound build - had trouble choosing his fondest memories as a Griz.

“There are so many to list, but playing my last season when Dicky (quarterback Dave Dickenson) was a junior and then seeing all of the guys after a loss at Youngstown State, and knowing that was our last opportunity to play together is a special memory,” Gragg said.

“Coming back to win at the end of the game against SDSU (52-48, in 1993) was another good memory. Those are two of the big ones. The streak that we kept alive against Montana State when I was a senior, that was another great memory that I will hold onto.”

Gragg, the tallest player in Griz football history, is the only three-time recipient of UM's Paul Weskamp Award for outstanding offensive lineman. He started 38 straight games, and is the only UM player selected to play in the Senior Bowl.

He is an active member of Athletes in Action and he's on the board of directors of the Pro Athlete Outreach organization. Gragg, who owns a degree in math from UM, is currently pursuing his master's degree in education at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore.

At Silverton High School, Scott was all-conference both ways in football, and also lettered in basketball and track.

Scott and his wife, Toni, have a daughter, Anna, 9, and a son, Brian, 7.
