Beltre helps O's end three-game skid
By the Missoulian

OGDEN, Utah - Some strong starting pitching and home runs from a pair of unlikely sources helped the Missoula Osprey avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Ogden Raptors on Sunday at Lindquist Field.

Cristian Beltre posted his first win in his last six decisions and both Jose Dijol and Ariel Urena went deep for the first time this season as Missoula halted its three-game Pioneer League losing streak with a solid 6-4 victory.

Beltre tossed six innings of five-hit ball and allowed two runs and two walks to go with a strikeout. The lone blemish on his outing was a two-run homer off the bat of Ogden center fielder Jovanny Rosario in the home half of the third.

Dijol connected for a solo shot off Raptors reliever Matt Sartor with one out in the eighth with the O's clinging to a 3-2 lead. Two batters later, Urena homered to dead center pushing Missoula's lead to 5-2.

Ogden fought back for two in the bottom of the frame on a bases-loaded error by Reynaldo Navarro, cutting the Raptors deficit to 5-4. But Osprey designated hitter Sean Coughlin doubled home Eli Rumler from first for an insurance tally in the ninth.

In the bottom of the frame, new Missoula reliever Luke Prihoda surrendered a one-out single to Erik Kanaby before enticing a game-ending double play out of league home run leader Travis Vetters to get the save, his first as a professional.

The victory moved the Osprey to 6-7 in the season's second half and for a moment stopped the bleeding by a team that entered having dropped 15 of its previous 19.

Urena, who is hitting a tepid .195, went 3-for-4 in leading Missoula's 12-hit attack. Jimmy Principie, leading off and playing left field, went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Second baseman Rumler smacked his sixth double of the season and finished 2-for-4.

Rosario was 3-for-4 with a stolen base for the Raptors. Ogden shortstop Jaime Pedroza added a double and two singles.

Wilfredo Diaz, a converted starter, took the loss for Ogden and leveled his mark at 1-1. He went five innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits while walking two and fanning a pair.

Principie's sacrifice fly in the second staked the O's to a 1-0 lead before Rosario's blast gave Ogden a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth, Osprey catcher Bill Musselman came home on a throwing error by Rosario and Principie drove in Urena with a single as Missoula went ahead 4-2.

The Osprey continue their Utah road swing with a three-game series beginning Monday at Orem.

Notes from the nest: Tyrell Worthington, the newest Osprey and the Arizona Diamondbacks' fifth-round pick in this year's draft, made his professional debut, entering in center field in the seventh. He struck out in both of his at-bats... Rosario was pulled by Raptors manager Juan Bustabad after getting thrown out attempting to steal second without sliding, ending the seventh inning... Missoula remained four games back of first-place Great Falls in the North Division after the White Sox posted a come-from-behind 2-1 win at home over the Casper Rockies.
