Big 7th inning lifts Osprey to win
By the Missoulian

OREM, Utah - After sinking for six innings in Walden's Pond, the Missoula Osprey finally found their stroke.

Orem Owlz starting pitcher Jordan Walden limited the O's to one hit through six innings as his team built a 3-0 lead. When he was replaced by Leonardo Calderon in the seventh, Missoula went wild.

The Osprey scored five runs and faced three Orem relievers before the seventh was over. They held on for a much-needed 5-3 win Wednesday in Pioneer League action at Brent Brown Field.

Santo Baez (2-4) picked up his first win in more than a month, coming on in relief of Brett Reynolds in the fifth inning. Baez allowed just one run on two hits in 3 2-3 innings, then turned it over to Yonata Ortega, who posted his first save.

Missoula moved to 7-9 in North Division play and picked up a game on leader Great Falls, moving within five. After Wednesday's contest, the O's jumped on the team bus for a nine-hour ride back to Missoula where they will begin a seven game homestand Thursday at 7:05 p.m. against the Ogden Raptors.

The O's seventh-inning rally started when Taylor Harbin singled and Sean Coughlin drew a walk. Harbin came home with Missoula's first run on a Derrick Walker single.

The O's later loaded the bases when Owlz second baseman Ryan Kennedy booted a ball hit by Anthony Smith.

Walker came in to score on a Chance Wheeless sacrifice fly. Tremayne Holland then came in for Calderon, but the Osprey added three more runs. Peter Clifford drew a bases-loaded walk and Reynaldo Navarro reached on a fielding error by first baseman Jay Brossman that scored Smith and Victor Estevez.

Brossman lost his footing on the play and suffered an undisclosed injury. The game was delayed 27 minutes while he was loaded onto a stretcher.

The Owlz (8-8 South Division) drew first blood on a home run by Andrew Romine in the first frame. They added a run in the third after Reynolds walked the first two hitters he faced, then added another in the sixth after Baez allowed a leadoff double to Julio Perez.

The Owlz put the potential tying run on base in the seventh inning. But Baez worked his way out of the jam by striking out Jerry Gonzalez-Lopez.

Orem threatened again in the eighth, and this time it was Ortega who got the O's out of the jam. Jeremy Moore reached on a walk and Chris Rosenbaum took first after Ortega hit him with a pitch with two outs, but Ortega redeemed himself when Kevin Kennedy grounded out to end the inning.

The Owlz landed one runner aboard in the ninth, but two straight ground outs ended the rally.

Walker led the Osprey at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Perez had a pair of doubles for the Owlz.

Both teams struggled with the gloves. Missoula committed three errors and Orem four.
