State lawmakers review elections audit
Posted on Aug. 22

By the Associated Press

HELENA - The Secretary of State's Office says it is already implementing more than a dozen changes recommended in a legislative audit to improve state elections under the Help America Vote Act.

Chief Deputy Secretary Ralph Peck told the Legislative Audit Committee he agrees with the audit's findings, and says elections officials had already been working on several of the issues when the audit was conducted.

The audit, released last week, found inconsistencies in the implementation of laws surrounding absentee ballots, and suggested the secretary of state's office lead the way to mitigate problems caused by same-day voter registration, such as long lines.

It found no evidence of dead individuals or incarcerated felons voting illegally.
