Whitebark pine programs on agenda at MNHC
The Montana Natural History Center will present two programs on whitebark pine.
At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Diana Tomback will lecture on the ecology of the whitebark pine, as well as threats to the species due to climate change and other factors. Suggested donation is $3 for adults, $1 for kids; members are free. A volunteer open house and grand opening of a new whitebark pine exhibit begins at 6 p.m.
Volunteers needed for fence removal work
Volunteers are needed Sept. 29 to remove fencing in the Chamberlain Creek area in the Blackfoot River Valley, approximately 50 miles east of Missoula.
Volunteers will meet in the Town Pump parking lot in Bonner at 8 a.m. and carpool to the site. Work will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Bureau of Land Management is sponsoring the event as part of National Public Lands Day. Participants will receive a sack lunch, barbecue meal and T-shirt. Wear gloves, boots, pants and long-sleeve shirts. Sunglasses or safety glasses are recommended, along with water.

Glacial Lake Missoula field trip on slate
Explore some of the easternmost geological features of Glacial Lake Missoula during a one-day field trip with the Ice Age Floods Institute.
“Missoula to Drummond: The Trail of Glacial Lake Missoula Evidence” takes place Saturday, Sept. 29, via a tour bus traveling the Interstate 90 corridor east of Missoula. Trip leaders Dick Berg and Larry Smith, geologists from the Butte office of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, will provide interpretation during the trip. Berg and Smith also will discuss related topics, including the region's volcanic past and its mining history.
The cost is $35 for IAFI members and $55 for nonmembers. It includes transportation, a sack lunch, snacks and beverages. The field trip will depart from the Broadway Inn, located near the intersection of West Broadway and Russell Street.
Seating is limited and reservations should be made by Friday. Hunters and anglers to hold tailgate
Hunters, anglers and outdoor folks are invited to the Hellgate Hunters and Anglers tailgate at Saturday's Montana Grizzlies football game beginning at 11 a.m. The event is co-sponsored by the White Bear Society.
Wild game brats, Kettlehouse beer and other snacks will be available. The tailgate is free and will be held on the practice field south of the footbridge.

New rock climbing film to be shown at UM
The Reel Rock Film Tour coming to Missoula on Thursday, Sept. 27, will feature the new film “King Lines,” which follows rock climbing phenomenon Chris Sharma on his global quest to complete the hardest and most inspiring climbs.
The film will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Urey Lecture Hall on the University of Montana campus. Tickets are $7 in advance at the UM Outdoor Program office in the Fitness Center or $9 at the door.

Recreational Equipment Inc. will present a free clinic on “Rock Climbing: How to Get Started” from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Missoula retail location, 2230 N. Reserve St.
REI climbing expert Dan Wickes will cover essential climbing gear and provide resources for developing or furthering your climbing skills. Attendees will receive prizes.
