Bobcats rally from 10-0 hole

BOZEMAN - Jack Rolovich passed for 282 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns and Kevin Retoriano returned an interception 82 yards for a score Saturday as Montana State rallied for a 40-20 victory over Idaho State.

Demetrius Crawford had 23 carries for 173 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown for Montana State (3-1, 2-0 Big Sky), ranked 18th in The Sports Network FCS poll. Josh Lewis added eight receptions for 117 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown catch that gave MSU a 21-17 lead with 11:46 left in the third quarter.

Idaho State (0-2, 1-3 Big Sky) pulled to 21-20 on a 41-yard field goal by Branden Jones with 9:20 left in the third.

MSU added a 6-yard TD pass from Rolovich to Elliott Barnhart and a 29-yard field goal by Michael Sweeney to take a 31-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats added a safety and Crawford's touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Idaho State started out strong, scoring on their first two drives - a 42-yard field goal by Jones and a 1-yard run by Clint Knickrehm.

A 92-yard drive by MSU ended with a 2-yard touchdown rush by Aaron Mason, followed less than three minutes later by Retoriano's interception return for a 14-10 lead.

D.J. Clark answered with a 48-yard interception return of his own as the Bengals took a 17-14 lead with 2:21 left in the half.

Josh Barnett led ISU with 135 yards on 21 carries. Bengal quarterback Luke Butler went 12 of 23 for 125 yards and two interceptions.

At Sacramento, Calif., freshman quarterback Jason Smith threw for 233 yards, tossed two touchdown passes and ran 2 yards for another score to lead Sacramento State over Northern Arizona.

Running back Bryan Hilliard ran for 100 yards and a score, and receiver Ryan Coogler caught three passes for 95 yards and a TD for Sac State (1-3, 1-1 Big Sky).

Marshall Sperbeck earned his first career victory as Sacramento State's head coach.

Alex Watson had two catches for 45 yards and a touchdown for NAU (2-3, 1-1 Big Sky).

Coogler caught a 14-yard pass from Jason Smith and ran it 60 yards for a touchdown to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.

The Hornets ended the first half leading 17-3 after a 40-yard field goal by Juan Gamboa and a 60-yard interception return by linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo.

At San Luis Obispo, Calif., Cal Poly option quarterback Jonathan Dally rushed for four touchdowns as the Mustangs handed Northern Colorado its 13th straight loss.

The Mustangs (3-2) played before 9,684 fans, the second-largest crowd in Alex G. Spanos Stadium history. Most of those fans, however, left by halftime after the Mustangs jumped to a 28-7 lead.

Wingback Jono Grayson (127 yards) and fullback Jon Hall (89 yards) led the Mustangs' rushing attack but were kept out of the end zone. Hall's replacement, Kevin Spach, added a three-yard touchdown for the final score.

Portland St. 28, E. Washington 21

At Cheney, Wash., Brian White passed for 329 yards and three touchdowns as Portland State rolled up 520 yards of total offense to beat Eastern Washington.

Olaniyi Sobomehin added 141 yards rushing for the Vikings (2-3, 2-0 Big Sky), who overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit to beat the Eagles (3-1, 1-1).

With the score tied at 14 early in the fourth quarter, White guided Portland State 87 yards for a go-ahead score, an 11-yard TD pass to Reggie Joseph with 4:35 left.

After an Eastern Washington punt, Sobomehin capped a six-play, 38-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run that put the Vikings ahead 28-14 with 3:28 left.

The Eagles pulled within 28-21 on Matt Nichols' 23-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Boyce with 2:37 on the clock.

With 23 seconds left, Portland State turned the ball over on downs at the Eastern Washington 22-yard line. Nichols passed to Evan Robbins for 36 yards to the Vikings' 42 with seven seconds to go, but Nichols' final pass attempt was intercepted in the end zone as time expired.
