Whitefish Mountain Resort garners high marks
By MICHAEL JAMISON of the Missoulian

WHITEFISH - The best skiing under the Big Sky isn't down at Big Sky, but rather up in Whitefish, at the resort formerly known as Big Mountain.

This month, Ski Magazine ranked Whitefish Mountain Resort 20th in North America as part of its annual “Top 50 Resort Guide.” It is the highest ranking any Montana ski area has ever received from the national magazine.

This issue marks two decades of the yearly reader survey, in which skiers submit grades in 18 categories for North American resorts. Some 20,000 surveys were sent, with subscribers placing the Whitefish resort 10th for scenery, 16th for value, 23rd for terrain - and 20th overall.

One reader called the Whitefish resort “one of the most overlooked and undervalued mountains” in the West, while others praised its expansive tree skiing, thin crowds, deep snow and local flavor.

“We're thrilled that our guests continue to report such positive experiences,” said Daniel Graves, newly named president of the resort. He called kudos from skiers “the highest measurement of success.”

This season, Graves said, resort owners aim to improve yet again, with several upgrades in the works. Skiers will find a new road to the village, new high-speed chairlifts, a new day lodge, new beginner slopes, new snowmaking capacity, new groomers and an upgraded terrain park and super pipe.

The mountain's 60th season is set to open Dec. 8, well after the traditional Thanksgiving Day opener. The summit is white already, however, with the first snowfall capping Big Mountain's summit on Sept. 18.

Big Sky Resort, near Bozeman, scored 26th in the magazine's survey. Deer Valley, Utah, topped the charts, with Colorado resorts claiming six of the top 10 spots. Others in the top 10 were Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia; Park City, Utah; and Sun Valley, Idaho.
