Hamilton dethrones Whitefish
By the Missoulian

ANACONDA - The Hamilton boys won their first state golf championship in 21 years, but not before putting their coach through the ringer.

The Broncs posted a score of 301 on Thursday at Old Works Golf Course to easily outdistance Billings Central for the team crown with a total of 619. Central was second at 644, followed by Whitefish at 646.

It was the race for individual honors that put a knot in the stomach of Hamilton coach Owen Burch. Jake Wilson shot a round of 3-under-par 69 to tie teammate Josh Grenier for medalist honors with 36-hole totals of 145.

Wilson prevailed in a two-hole playoff to take the top spot in what Burch called “the worst thing I've ever gone through as a coach.”

“They're both champions,” Burch said. “In my opinion, there were two first-place winners.”

Wilson and Grenier played together in the final pairing.

“Jake is awesome,” Grenier said. “He deserved to win. I was glad I got to play with him today.”

The Broncs entered the final round tied with three-time defending state champion Whitefish in the team standings.

“We weren't sure if we could win and it ended up working out that way and everyone is excited about it,” Wilson said. “We believed in one another. When one of us is down someone else steps up.”

Perennial power Whitefish took the girls' team crown for the second straight season. The Bulldogs posted a second-day total of 344 to overtake first-round leader Glendive with a two-day total of 717. The Red Devils were next at 729, followed by Polson at 763.

Glendive's Kalli Stanhope took medalist honors with an 81-79-160 two-day total. That was nine strokes better than second-place Hanna Barney of Livingston. Whitefish teammates Quinn Micklewright and Chelsea Ray were next at 173 and 175, respectively.
