The Edge

Missoulian reporter Nick Lockridge assesses the strengths of both teams

OFFENSE

QB

Montana

SUU

By default, Montana junior Cole Bergquist should have the better day. Northern Colorado’s Dominic Breazeale is last among Big Sky starting QBs in yards (480), attempts (90) and completion percentage (50). Those type of numbers won’t improve against the nation’s No. 2 defense.

OL

Montana

SUU

The Bears have allowed two fewer sacks than the Griz, but each team is equally as bad compared to the rest of the conference in that category n maybe one reason why Bergquist is UM’s No. 2 rusher.

RB

Montana

SUU

We all know things have been slow for Lex and the gang recently, but with Northern Colorado in town the run game should pick up. The Bears are last in the league vs. the run. Also, TBF had his first career 100-yard game against UNC last year in place of an injured Lex.

WR/TE

Montana

SUU

UNC tight end Ryan Chesla and Montana wideout Eric Allen were high school teammates in Colorado Springs. Chesla has four of his team’s five receiving TDs. Allen leads the Griz with three TD grabs, but his last one came three weeks ago.

DEFENSE

DL

Montana

SUU

Kroy, Kroy, he’s our boy! If he can’t do it, no one... Seriously, though, try to find a better D-line than the Grizzlies. They allow a measely 2.8 yards per carry. Northern Colorado is last in the Big Sky at 5.5 yards a carry.

LB

Montana

SUU

Bears junior backer Christian Sarmento has recorded double-digit tackles the last four games, including 25 in their last two conference games. Montans’s backers are consistently some of the Big Sky’s best.

CB/SAFETY

Montana

SUU

Torrey Thomas has 11 career picks, three of them returned for TDs and Colt Anderson has led the Silvertips in tackles two of the last three weeks. UNC is the only team in the BSC to allow more than 2,000 yards through the air so far this fall.

SPECIAL TEAMS

K/P/Returns

Montana

SUU

The Griz lead the league in kicking, while the Bears have attempted just two field goals n and made none. As for punter, insert your own backup-punter joke here and we’ll move on. In the return game, UM is averaging nearly 6 yards more a return than UNC in kickoffs and punts.

Intangibles

Montana

SUU

Northern Colorado is the least penalized team in the Big Sky. UNC does not have a bye this season. The Bears have scored the fewest points (28) against other Big Sky foes. Second-to-worst? Montana at 59 points. Nothern Colorado has 11 seniors on their team, the Griz have 22 seniors on their roster.
