Hauck, who just completed an 11-1 season with the Griz, has been mentioned often the last two months as a possible replacement for Sonny Lubick, who appears on his way out after 15 seasons as Colorado State's coach.
An Associated Press story on Monday said that CSU was in “retirement negotiations” with the 70-year-old Lubick, who went 108-74 coaching the Rams. He has two years remaining on a four-year extension he signed in 2006.
Hauck did not return a phone call seeking comment. He issued a denial that he is up for the CSU job through Dave Guffey, UM's associate athletic director for media relations.
The Grizzlies held a team meeting Monday, though two sources said it was a standard end-of-the-season gathering to tell the seniors when to turn in their equipment and the rest to hit the weights for 2008.
“As of 5:30 p.m. on Monday, I had not received any calls. From anybody,” Jim O'Day, UM's athletic director, said Monday. “At this time of year, once the football season ends, there's always a lot of speculation.
“That's just part of what takes place in late November and December.”
The 43-year-old Hauck has guided Montana to five straight Big Sky Conference titles and Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoff berths. His 2006 team made the FCS semifinals, losing 19-17 to Massachusetts. The 2004 Griz made the national championship, losing 31-21 to James Madison.
On Saturday Montana lost a first-round game to Wofford, 23-22. The Grizzlies had gone through the regular season 11-0 for just the second time in program history, and first since 1996. They've won 16 straight Big Sky Conference games dating back to 2005.
