First flu case of season reported in Missoula
By JOHN SMITHERS of the Missoulian

Influenza Type A, with its accompanying baggage of fever, chills and body aches, has arrived in Missoula.

The first case of flu was reported Wednesday by Greg Oliver, director of health promotion for the Missoula City-County Health Department.

A 58-year-old man was confirmed as having influenza A on Nov. 30. He was exposed in Missoula and has no history of travel, which is important to note, Oliver said.

“This was (local), and this is the very front end,” Oliver said. “It's going to take a while before it kicks in.”

Including Missoula, flu has been reported in four counties in Montana. The others are Cascade, Gallatin and Blaine.

What concerns Oliver is the circulating fear that it's too late to get a flu shot. Not true, he said.

“We've heard that there have been commercial radio reports that it's no good to get shots,” he said. “I don't know how much of that word is out there, but it's not being sent out by health officials.

“It would actually be very wise to get the flu shots now. It's real and it's here.”
