Biermann, Carpenter earn spots on Walter Camp All-America team
By FRITZ NEIGHBOR of the Missoulian

University of Montana football players Kroy Biermann and Dan Carpenter, two mainstays in the Grizzlies' 11-1 campaign this fall, have been named to the Walter Camp All-America team for the Football Championship Subdivision.

Biermann, a defensive end from Hardin, and Carpenter, a kicker from Helena, were among four Big Sky Conference players honored. Linebacker Bobby Daly of Montana State and Portland State center Brennan Carvalho also made the team. Biermann and Carvalho made the team for the second straight season.

Carpenter, 6-foot-2 and 211 pounds, made 19 of 23 field goal attempts this season on the way to 101 points. He finished his career with 413 points and 75 field goals, both FCS records.

“Cool. I'm surprised,” said the Helena High product, who also ran for a touchdown in his UM career, and was a first-team Associated Press All-American last season.

“It means a lot. They picked me to be the best out of 118 other kickers out there, that's pretty cool. To be recognized as one of the best, that's a pretty big honor.”

Biermann, 6-3 and 238 pounds, was named the Big Sky Conference defensive most valuable player after making 15 sacks and 18 tackles for loss, while forcing five fumbles and blocking two kicks. He had 11 sacks and 14 tackles a year ago to make the Camp team, which dates back to 1889, for the first time.

Biermann is also a leading candidate for the Buck Buchanan Award, given annually to the top defensive player in the FCS. In all, 11 of the 12 defensive players on the Camp team are up for the award, which will be announced next Thursday in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The list includes two-time Camp All-America honorees Tony LeZotte, a safety out of James Madison, and McNeese State defensive end Bryan Smith.

Daly, a junior from Helena, led the Big Sky with 135 tackles, with an average of 12.3 per game. He also had five sacks and 15.5 tackles for losses.

Carvalho, a senior from Hawaii, switched from guard to center in 2007. He also received All-America honors from the Sports Network and the Associated Press in 2006.

The offensive team is highlighted by three-time selection Ricky Santos, a quarterback from New Hampshire and the reigning Walter Payton Award winner, and running backs Omar Cuff of Delaware and Tim Hightower of Richmond.
