Library collects Indian titles vetted for accurate cultural portrayals
By JOYCE DOYLE for the Missoulian

In her column on Nov. 1, "Sifting through 'Indian' themes," Missoulian columnist Jodi Rave wrote: "This nation's education system stripped generations of Native students from a cultural identity.

"Educators need to give it back. They can start by getting reputable books into the hands of children."

Missoula Public Library children's librarian Karen Gonzales is happy to accept the challenge. Gonzales has prepared a list of reputable books for children. The updated list is available at the Children's Desk or online at missoulapubliclibrary.org. Look under "Youth Services," then "Recommended Reads." Use the pull-down menu to select "Books By and About Native Peoples."

In other book news, the National Education Association recently published their "Native American Booklist." Debbie Reese, author of the blog "American Indians in Children's Literature," www.americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com, discusses this list in her Oct. 30 post. Suffice it to say that she finds some of the recommended books are "problematic."

Reese's Nov. 15 blog entry celebrates National Book Award winner Sherman Alexie for his recent novel "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian." In his first young adult book, Alexie - who has Spokane and Coeur d'Alene tribal heritage, writes somewhat autobiographically.

As Reese mentions, you can also read about these tribes on the Internet. They produce their own Web sites, unfiltered through the eyes of an outsider. That is always the best way to get accurate, respectful and authentic information about individual tribes. Read and enjoy.

Have a lot of books you've already read? Need to make space for the new books Santa might bring? The Friends of Missoula Public Library accept book donations throughout the year for their ongoing sale. All proceeds go to the group, which supports library services and programs. While you're in the library dropping off donations, look through our sale shelves. You might find a title that you would like to bring back home.

Book clubs are also invited to donate their titles for our Book Chat Bags. Book Chat Bags include multiple copies of one title and a discussion guide with book reviews, author information and additional resources. Reserve them in advance by having one member call the Reference Desk at 721-2665 or stop by the library.

Find a list of Book Chat Bags on our Web site: http://www.missoulapubliclibrary.org, click on "More Resources," then "Book Chat Bags" on the right-hand side.

At the bottom of the page, you'll find a link to Book Club Works, a nonprofit organization formed by a Montana discussion group. They provide a way to donate books to tribal teachers, women's shelters, youth homes, disaster relief victims and others by "adopting" a group or organization.
