Abused animals find good homes

CORVALLIS - More than 30 horses and one llama seized in what some called the largest case of animal abuse ever in Ravalli County were parceled out to good homes, according to Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman.

The 34 horses and a variety of other animals were seized in August from Delbert Carter, 80, of Corvallis, after the sheriff's department received information the animals weren't being cared for properly.

The animals were temporarily housed at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. The Bitter Root Humane Association was called to take care of the animals and many volunteers stepped in to help.

More than 100 pounds of hay a day were required to feed the animals.

Their injuries included serious leg cuts, bad feet and hernias. Several of the animals were very thin, with their ribs showing.

Carter was charged with 16 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

His daughters traveled to Ravalli County and helped place the animals with people who could properly care for them in Beaverhead County and eastern Montana, Hoffman said.

“They totally helped us get that accomplished,” Hoffman said. “It was a case that was very time-consuming. Some of the animals were in terribly poor condition. There were a lot of issues with it.”
