BOULDER - A man is dead after being hit by police gunfire in Boulder.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department says 31-year-old Francis Stately was declared dead at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena, after Deputy Dave Kasola shot him early Saturday.

Sheriff Craig Doolittle says Stately had fired a shotgun after threatening a Boulder city officer who responded to a report of a suicidal man. Doolittle says that after his deputies arrived, Stately pointed his gun at Kasola, who fired his weapon and wounded the man.

Kasola’s been placed on leave while an investigation takes place. An autopsy is planned at the state crime laboratory in Missoula.
