Missoula mountain biker has Olympic potential

Missoula mountain-biking phenom Sam Schultz is one step closer to the Olympics.

Schultz, 22, was just named to USACycling's "long team" for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

"I'm super-psyched about it," Schultz said Friday from Tucson, where he is spending the winter training. "I was hoping it would happen, but it sure feels better when you see it written down."

Schultz, ranked 75th in the world, was the sixth man nominated for the team. He's also the youngest.

The "long team" will be winnowed to a shorter list of two riders and possibly one alternate some time after a series of World Cup events and the World Championships in Italy in June.

Those riders will represent America when the Olympics get started in China in August.
