BOYS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Noxon bests Hot Springs, wraps up 14-C title
By the Missoulian

NOXON - Senior swing player Pete Ferrell made sure the Noxon boys' basketball team nailed its chance at winning the District 14-C regular-season title.

Ferrell scored 28 points to lead the Red Devils past Hot Springs 61-53 in the winner-takes-first-place season finale for each squad.

Noxon, which claimed the top seed at next week's district tournament in Ronan, was keyed by a strong first half that saw the Red Devils take a 17-point lead into halftime.

“We sort of jumped on them a little bit and they got off to a slow start,” said Noxon head coach Ryan Weltz, who saw his team finish at 8-2 in conference, 12-5 overall. “In the second quarter we began switching up our man and zone defenses and kept them on their heels.”

The Red Devils, who received 14 points from Cody Linderman and 11 from Ryan Eichert, led by as many as 19 in the third quarter before Hot Springs charged back. Noxon kept the Savage Heat in the game by shooting just 10-for-20 from the foul line, including an 8-for-15 effort in the fourth quarter.

“To their credit, Hot Springs battled back,” Weltz said. “I guess we just played like a team that wanted it a little more.”

Nick Pavelich scored 24 and Drew Flagen had 19 for Hot Springs (7-3, 11-7).
