Two candidates are Montana school leaders, while one comes from Scottsdale, Ariz., and one from Selah, Wash. Public interviews with all four are set for March 3-4. The candidates will also meet with staff and administrator groups and attend a public open house. A final schedule of events is expected in late February.
The four men seek to replace Superintendent Jim Clark, who is retiring in June. Clark has been head of MCPS for five years.
Alexander Apostle, Ph.D., served as an assistant superintendent for the Tacoma Public Schools and as a high school principal in Tacoma, Wash. He is currently involved in real estate development and as a private investor in Scottsdale. He was a high school principal in Issaquah, Sedro-Woolley and Finley, Wash. He was a teacher in Tacoma, Wash. Apostle earned a bachelor's degree in physical education/secondary education/science at the University of Puget Sound. He holds a master's degree in physical education/education and an education specialist degree in administration from the University of Idaho. He earned his doctorate in education administration/
cognate area statistics from the University of Idaho.
Larry Parsons, Ph.D., currently serves as superintendent of the Selah School District. He was the executive director of the northeast area for the Spokane School District. He served as a high school principal at Central Valley School District and Aberdeen School District in Washington State, and at Aspen School District in Colorado. He has been a language arts instructor in both Oregon and Wyoming. Parsons earned a bachelor's degree in education/language arts and a master's degree in secondary education from Eastern Oregon State College. He holds an administrative certificate from Portland State University and a doctorate in education leadership from Gonzaga University.
Brian Patrick currently serves as superintendent in Townsend. He was superintendent and grades 7-12 principal in Broadus. He taught history and foreign language in Townsend. He earned a bachelor's degree in social studies and foreign language from Western Montana College and a master's in educational administration from Montana State University-Bozeman. He has been active in leadership with both the Montana Association of School Superintendents and the School Administrators of Montana.
James Whealon currently serves as superintendent of Anaconda Public Schools. He served as superintendent in Winifred. He was the state director of vocational education, plants and facilities, adult education, employment and training, student transportation, driver's education and Title IX for the Office of Public Instruction. He was a counselor/teacher at the Family Training Center at the Glasgow Air Force Base. He served as director of developmental disabilities at the Boulder River School and Hospital in Boulder. He earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences and a master's degree from the University of Montana-Western. He received his principal endorsement from the University of Montana, and his superintendent endorsement from Montana State University.
