Cross-country ski outing moved, rescheduled
The Bitterroot-Mission Group of the Sierra Club has rescheduled its cross-country ski outing from Lolo Pass to Lee Creek from Feb. 10 to this Sunday. The trip is recommended for more experienced skiers who have skills in turning, slowing down and stopping. Car pooling is encouraged; bring a day-pack lunch; group size is limited. The Montana Taxidermists Association will hold its annual wildlife art show and competition Friday and Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn on North Reserve Street. The show is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Featured will be area wildlife artists, Raptor of the Rockies’ Kate Davis at noon Saturday, a laser shooting system display by Fish, Wildlife and Parks on both days and a public auction at 7 p.m. Saturday. STEVENSVILLE - The public is invited to Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge for a field trip identifying “backyard birds” Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon starting at the Visitor Center. The field trip reflects integration with the nationwide program Great Backyard Bird Count that occurs Feb. 16-19 and is co-managed by the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Birders can spend as little as 15 minutes during the four-day period; all that is needed is to tally the highest number of birds of each species. Larry Weeks will lead a Five Valleys Audubon Society field trip Tuesday to view winter resident birds in the Mission Valley. Meet in the middle of the University of Montana Adams Center parking lot at 8 a.m. for car pooling or at the Ninepipes Lodge at 9 a.m. Bring a lunch and dress warmly.
